Back in the day bicycles were used as a method of transport. They were robust and cheap, fulfilled the purpose for which they were intended, almost impossible to damage unless you got under a car in which case everyone was more concerned about repairing you than the bicycle, and only stolen if you neglected to use your bicycle chain lock.
